Linux Kernel up to 6.12.95/6.18.38/7.1.3/7.2-rc2 Netfilter skb_copy_bits Remote Code Execution

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.95/6.18.38/7.1.3/7.2-rc2. Affected by this issue is the function skb_copy_bits of the component Netfilter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: handle unreadable frags sashiko reports: When an skb with unreadable fragments (such as from devmem TCP, where skb_frags_readable(skb) returns false) is processed by the u32 module, skb_copy_bits() will safely return a negative error code [..] xt_u32: bail out with hotdrop in this case. gather_frags: return -1, just as if we had no fragment header. nfnetlink_queue: restrict to the linear part. nfnetlink_log: restrict to the linear part. v2: - skb_zerocopy helpers don't copy readable flag, i.e. nfnetlink_queue is broken too xt_u32 shouldn't return true if hotdrop was set.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-64414 since 07/19/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/25/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.96, 6.18.39, 7.1.4 or 7.2-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3b13e7635795394705920cca1e1db7e4ca2e334b/fc5bfe63bacf8a3ae307b62b34206406ca733354/57056be3ec12e7d9ecd20a60d4060f510e4f284c/da5b58478a9c1b85608c9e40a3b8432d071b409e is able to eliminate this problem.
