Integer overflow in the AttemptWrite function in Graphics Rendering Engine (GDI) on Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, and Server 2003 SP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted metafile (image) with a large record length value, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was released 08/14/2007 by Yuji Ukai (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-3034 since 06/05/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2735 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25884 (MS07-046: Vulnerability in GDI Could Allow Remote Code Execution (938829)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9097.
