Linux Kernel up to 7.1.3 ALSA ice1712 driver aureon.c snd_ctl_new1 null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.177/6.6.144/6.12.95/6.18.38/7.1.3. Affected is the function snd_ctl_new1 of the file ice1712.c/ice1724.c/aureon.c of the component ALSA ice1712 driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: ice1712: check snd_ctl_new1() return value snd_ctl_new1() can return NULL when memory allocation fails. The ice1712 driver calls snd_ctl_new1() without checking the return value before dereferencing the pointer in multiple places (ice1712.c, ice1724.c, aureon.c), which can lead to NULL pointer dereferences. Add NULL checks after snd_ctl_new1() calls and return -ENOMEM if any fails.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-64480 since 07/19/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/26/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 329990 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-64480), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.96, 6.18.39, 7.1.4 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 57d59be545b309d4bb54ac472b15d1e67f254d95/69bf1dfa3215524c4ae255bb9dce0770875abbeb/d34ad480b8896d2b486e2cf29ce1790326cad205/71b87108ad93d433cdb20704a8dc8852304cf2c2/38a7cc46370a57122fb29c4bfe48a851c0c64459/2b929b91b0f3bc6de8a844370049cd99ee8e31ff is able to eliminate this problem.
