Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization (the affected version unknown). Affected is an unknown part of the component containerized-data-importer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In containerized-data-importer (CDI), the aggregated cdi.kubevirt.io:view ClusterRole, intended to provide read-only access to CDI resources, includes a rule granting create on the datavolumes/source subresource. CDI's DataVolume clone authorization accepts this permission as sufficient to authorize cloning the contents of any PVC the caller can name, without requiring write access to the source namespace. A user or service account bound to the view role, commonly granted cluster-wide via ClusterRoleBinding, who also has ordinary write access (edit/admin) to any single namespace, can use this to exfiltrate the contents of any PVC in the cluster into a namespace they control, bypassing namespace isolation and the read-only guarantee of the view role.
The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-17527 since 07/27/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 07/27/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
