Red Hat Enterprise Linux ICNS image icns_decompress out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (the affected version is unknown) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function icns_decompress of the component ICNS image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in the file-icns plugin in GIMP. When applying a decompressed mask during ICNS image processing, the plugin reads from the mask data buffer without verifying if the cursor exceeds the allocated resource size. If a crafted file contains a truncated mask resource, the icns_decompress function continues reading past the bounds of the buffer. This out-of-bounds read vulnerability results in information disclosure of heap contents, where memory contents are leaked as alpha channel pixel values, or a crash leading to a denial of service if unmapped memory is accessed.

The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-66759 since 07/27/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 07/27/2026).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
