IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0 symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0 and classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown function. Such manipulation leads to symlink. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2007-4270. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0 (Database Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple race conditions in IBM DB2 UDB 8 before Fixpak 15 and 9.1 before Fixpak 3 allow local users to gain root privileges via a symlink attack on certain files.

The bug was discovered 08/15/2007. The weakness was presented 08/18/2007 by Joshua J. Drake with Application Security, Inc. (Website). The advisory is available at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4270 since 08/09/2007. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25905 (IBM DB2 < 9 Fix Pack 3 / 8 Fix Pack 15 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36069), Tenable (25905), SecurityFocus (BID 25339†), OSVDB (40994†) and Secunia (SA26471†). See VDB-2960, VDB-3070, VDB-3463 and VDB-3464 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
