Summary
A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0. This issue affects some unknown processing. This manipulation causes memory corruption. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2007-4276. The attack may be initiated remotely. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM DB2 Universal Database up to 9.0 (Database Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in IBM DB2 UDB 8 before Fixpak 15 and 9.1 before Fixpak 3 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long DASPROF and possibly other environment variables, which are copied into the buildDasPaths buffer.
The bug was discovered 08/14/2007. The weakness was presented 08/18/2007 by Joshua J. Drake with Application Security, Inc. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4276 since 08/09/2007. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25905 (IBM DB2 < 9 Fix Pack 3 / 8 Fix Pack 15 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.
Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36067), Tenable (25905), SecurityFocus (BID 25339†), OSVDB (40979†) and Secunia (SA26471†). See VDB-2960, VDB-3070, VDB-3463 and VDB-3464 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
