The bug was discovered 10/14/2008. The weakness was disclosed 10/14/2008 by Wushi with Microsoft as MS08-057 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-3471 since 08/04/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-057 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6465.
