Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in id3lib 3.8.3. Affected by this vulnerability is the function RenderV2ToFile of the file tag_file.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The RenderV2ToFile function in tag_file.cpp in id3lib (aka libid3) 3.8.3 allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on a temporary file whose name is constructed from the name of a file being tagged.
The bug was discovered 08/17/2007. The weakness was shared 08/21/2007 as Bug 253553 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4460 since 08/21/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80625 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : gnome (cve_2007_4460_symlink_attack)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121453 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 10.5.0 Missing).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36371), Tenable (80625), SecurityFocus (BID 25372†), OSVDB (39631†) and Secunia (SA26536†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
