Active Directory in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 does not properly allocate memory for (1) LDAP and (2) LDAPS requests, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted request, aka "Active Directory Overflow Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 10/14/2008. The weakness was published 10/15/2008 by Paul Miseiko with nCircle as MS08-060 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-4023 since 09/10/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-060 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6480.
