kio/usernotificationhandler.cpp in the POP3 kioslave in kdelibs 4.10.95 before 4.13.3 does not properly generate warning notifications, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to obtain sensitive information via an invalid certificate.
The weakness was disclosed 06/19/2014 by Jim Scadden as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at quickgit.kde.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3494 since 05/14/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76374 (Fedora 19 : kdelibs-4.11.5-4.fc19 (2014-7572)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167677 (OpenSuSE Security Update for kdebase4-runtime, kdelibs4, (openSUSE-SU-2015:0573-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at quickgit.kde.org.
