Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux and OpenShift Container Platform (unknown version). Affected is an unknown code block of the component Samba. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An out-of-bounds read flaw was found in Samba's Kerberos Key Distribution Center's (KDC) password change (kpasswd) service. When processing malformed ASN.1-encoded Kerberos password change request, Samba server miscalculates the structure size and attempts to read up to six bytes beyond the end of the allocated buffer. While this out-of-bounds read typically results in a harmless decryption failure, if the read hits unmapped memory, it causes the KDC process to crash. An authenticated attacker can send a specially crafted kpasswd request containing malformed ASN.1 data to trigger the out-of-bounds read, which may cause the KDC process to terminate, resulting in a denial of service.
The advisory is available at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-58216 since 06/29/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/30/2026).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
