Microsoft Windows SMB Authentication improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version not known) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component SMB Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft Windows 2000 Gold through SP4, XP Gold through SP3, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Vista Gold and SP1, and Server 2008 allows remote SMB servers to execute arbitrary code on a client machine by replaying the NTLM credentials of a client user, as demonstrated by backrush, aka "SMB Credential Reflection Vulnerability." NOTE: some reliable sources report that this vulnerability exists because of an insufficient fix for CVE-2000-0834.

The bug was discovered 11/11/2008. The weakness was released 11/11/2008 by Andres Tarasco (LINUX) with Microsoft as MS08-068 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-4037 since 09/10/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/26/2025).

A public exploit has been developed by Andres Tarasco and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2026 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34743 (MS08-068: Vulnerability in SMB Could Allow Remote Code Execution (957097)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90467 (Microsoft SMB Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS08-068)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-068 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 14 hours after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19860.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (46194), Exploit-DB (7125), Tenable (34743), SecurityFocus (BID 7385†) and OSVDB (49736†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
