Integer overflow in the ReadRealIndex function in real.c in the Real demuxer plugin in VideoLAN VLC media player 0.9.0 through 0.9.7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed RealMedia (.rm) file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was released 12/01/2008 by Tobias Klein (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at trapkit.de. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-5276 since 11/28/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35056 (FreeBSD : vlc -- arbitrary code execution in the RealMedia processor (acf80afa-c3ef-11dd-a721-0030843d3802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116067 (VLC Media Player Real demuxer Heap Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (VideoLAN-SA-0811)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15241. In this case the pattern INDX is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8874.
