The weakness was released 12/01/2008 by Tobias Klein (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at trapkit.de. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-5276 since 11/28/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15241. In this case the pattern INDX is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8874.
