Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc4 libceph crush_decode array index

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.147/6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc4. Affected is the function crush_decode of the component libceph. Performing a manipulation results in array index. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2026-68154. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.147/6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc4. This affects the function crush_decode of the component libceph. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a array index vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-129. The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: libceph: reject zero bucket types in crush_decode CRUSH bucket type 0 is reserved for devices. The mapper relies on that invariant and uses type 0 to identify leaf devices. If crush_decode() accepts a bucket with type 0, a malformed CRUSH map can make the mapper treat a negative bucket ID as a device and pass it to is_out(), which then indexes the OSD weight array with a negative value. Reject zero bucket types while decoding the CRUSH map so the invalid state never reaches the mapper.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-68154 since 07/30/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.148, 6.12.101, 6.18.42, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b8a9fb6bf806f9c4891e71ae1beab0c07c23a877/826cd1de5802fd392922785f9b64d76e65d2a100/3b2f1937f5fce8b7dd5432e7693e3cc8b5eece56/70998f91030ee083ecb336a1dff0701c20a38081/05f90284223381005d6bcddab3fda4a97f9c3401 is able to eliminate this problem.
