CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as very critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.43/7.1.5/7.2-rc4. This impacts the function vma_can_userfault of the component userfaultfd. This manipulation causes stack-based overflow. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-68166. The attack is restricted to local execution. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.43/7.1.5/7.2-rc4 and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function vma_can_userfault of the component userfaultfd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: userfaultfd: prevent registration of special VMAs Vova Tokarev says: userfaultfd allows registration on shadow stack VMAs. With userfaultfd access, you can register on the shadow stack, discard a page ... and inject a page with chosen return addresses via UFFDIO_COPY. Update vma_can_userfault() to reject VM_SHADOW_STACK. While on it, also reject VM_SPECIAL so that if a driver would implement vm_uffd_ops, it wouldn't be possible to register special VMAs with userfaultfd. Since VM_SPECIAL includes VM_DONTEXPAND which is set but hugetlb, exclude hugetlb VMAs from the check for VM_SPECIAL.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-68166 since 07/30/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.44, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 165613191ad9d034bf17c00e3a142f9561597ec5/0c26202b157f1efc3cd2f26f5c30f59b508a6a5d/3c58f641e813c3c71039f8fd4d4e2a3aab713288 is able to eliminate this problem.
