Linux Kernel up to 7.1.5 VPE vip_probe_slice null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.5. Affected is the function vip_probe_slice of the component VPE. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: ti: vpe: Fix the error code of devm_kzalloc() in vip_probe_slice() In vip_probe_slice(), the error check for devm_kzalloc() incorrectly uses PTR_ERR_OR_ZERO() which returns 0 for NULL pointer. Return -ENOMEM for devm_kzalloc() failure.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-68208 since 07/30/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026).

Upgrading to version 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 956879b173c2cf782fbc3d18947fd1da286359cf/e8f319eae96a3d718e810d52432020a2b77f5f60 is able to eliminate this problem.
