Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3 amdgpu amdgpu_acpi_vfct_bios memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3. Impacted is the function amdgpu_acpi_vfct_bios of the component amdgpu. This manipulation causes memory leak. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-68238. The attack can be initiated remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function amdgpu_acpi_vfct_bios of the component amdgpu. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu: Release VFCT ACPI table reference amdgpu_acpi_vfct_bios() fetches the VFCT table with acpi_get_table() but never releases it. acpi_get_table() takes a reference on the table (incrementing its validation_count and mapping it on the 0->1 transition); without a paired acpi_put_table() the mapping is leaked on every call, whether or not a matching VBIOS image is found. Route all exit paths after the table is acquired through a common acpi_put_table(). The VBIOS image is copied out with kmemdup() before the table is released, so it remains valid for the caller. The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-68238 since 07/30/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 6.18.42, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 312278b3091912fa56a6a587609f17dcb33465c2/9b7de3ee5d2c5ee2a706e5f7ca0126f4fbea4da8/65bff26617607c1331283232016c0e89088c5b78 is able to eliminate this problem.
