Linux Kernel up to 6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3 amdkfd drm/amdkfd buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3. It has been declared as very critical. This impacts the function kfd_queue_acquire_buffers/kfd_queue_release_buffers of the file drm/amdkfd of the component amdkfd. Such manipulation leads to buffer overflow. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2026-68257. The attack must be carried out locally. There is no available exploit.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3. It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function kfd_queue_acquire_buffers/kfd_queue_release_buffers of the file drm/amdkfd of the component amdkfd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdkfd: fix 32-bit overflow in CWSR total size calculation total_cwsr_size was computed in 32-bit before being used as a BO/SVM allocation size. With large ctx_save_restore_area_size and debug_memory_size multiplied by the XCC count, the product can wrap, yielding an undersized CWSR save area that firmware later overruns. Promote total_cwsr_size to u64 and use check_add_overflow()/ check_mul_overflow() in both kfd_queue_acquire_buffers() and kfd_queue_release_buffers(). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-68257 since 07/30/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.12.101, 6.18.42, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b88ffe6593607364a8c06a48c6f29e55437cdf8e/abce3276c57e36c955627307469b9f009057a467/865532d54eb57b660b1cb1b0e1755776ce21b849/2b0386d4293920e690c0e017708f999b93cc729b is able to eliminate this problem.
