One Laptop Per Child OLPC Linux Build_542 access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

JFFS2, as used on One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) build 542 and possibly other Linux systems, when POSIX ACL support is enabled, does not properly store permissions during (1) inode creation or (2) ACL setting, which might allow local users to access restricted files or directories after a remount of a filesystem, related to "legacy modes" and an inconsistency between dentry permissions and inode permissions.

The bug was discovered 08/09/2007. The weakness was shared 09/12/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.infradead.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4849 since 09/12/2007. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 34 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29740 (Ubuntu 6.10 / 7.04 / 7.10 : linux-source-2.6.17/20/22 vulnerabilities (USN-558-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36596), Tenable (29740), SecurityFocus (BID 25838†), OSVDB (40564†) and Secunia (SA26978†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
