Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3 raw net/can/isotp.c raw_setsockopt race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3. This affects the function raw_setsockopt of the file net/can/isotp.c of the component raw. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: raw: add locking for raw flags bitfield With commit 890e5198a6e5 ("can: raw: use bitfields to store flags in struct raw_sock") the formerly separate integer values have been integrated into a single bitfield. This led to a read-modify-write operation when changing a flag in raw_setsockopt() which now needs a locking to prevent concurrent access. Instead of adding a lock/unlock hell in each of the flag manipulations this patch introduces a wrapper for a new raw_setsockopt_locked() function analogue to the isotp_setsockopt[_locked]() approach in net/can/isotp.c [mkl: use Closes tag instead of Link]

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-68387 since 07/30/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.42, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 00ba4bf8798242253fefc1fa6a78db1d445fd024/57791aab1129c9405f84bb0882de58967d8b44cd/1e5185c090589f4146d728ab36417d8a5419f127 is able to eliminate this problem.
