Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc4 Smb Client parse_dfs_referrals PathConsumed input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as very critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.147/6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc4. This affects the function parse_dfs_referrals of the component Smb Client. The manipulation of the argument PathConsumed leads to input validation. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2026-68343. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.147/6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc4 and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function parse_dfs_referrals of the component Smb Client. The manipulation of the argument PathConsumed with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: client: validate DFS referral PathConsumed parse_dfs_referrals() validates that the response contains the fixed referral entry array and, on for-next, the per-referral string offsets. However, the response also contains a PathConsumed value that is later used for DFS path parsing. If a malformed response provides a PathConsumed value larger than the search name, later DFS parsing can advance beyond the end of the path. Validate PathConsumed against the search name length before storing it in the parsed referral.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-68343 since 07/30/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.148, 6.12.101, 6.18.42, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5b439f39f33ec15d319ced3b025e122346fba987/285bd4a5f3f156aa5869843b47a1b1380b774241/2fdd6d196c656b376cc251e1e9ff110b3ed522e1/9f88a99ed511651b2dc2177d6854b2d1b8322e75/f6f5ee2aa33b350c671721b965251c42cebb962e is able to eliminate this problem.
