Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3 TCP memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability labeled as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component TCP. Such manipulation leads to memory leak. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2026-68379. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. No exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component TCP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tcp: fix TIME_WAIT socket reference leak on PSP policy failure Release the TIME_WAIT socket reference and jump to discard_it upon PSP policy failure in both IPv4 and IPv6 receive paths. This prevents a memory leak of tcp_tw_bucket structures.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-68379 since 07/30/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

Upgrading to version 6.18.42, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e666af5dcc905ba694745963174d232deb478c55/374742a961becbbfc7fbfd1382d978a05e492741/2c1931a81122c3cdc4c89448fe0442c69e21c0d5 is able to eliminate this problem.
