Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc3 cfg80211 net/wireless/scan.c cfg80211_is_element_inherited out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.147/6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3. Impacted is the function cfg80211_is_element_inherited of the file net/wireless/scan.c of the component cfg80211. Executing a manipulation can lead to out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-68402. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.147/6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc3. This vulnerability affects the function cfg80211_is_element_inherited of the file net/wireless/scan.c of the component cfg80211. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: cfg80211: bound element ID read when checking non-inheritance cfg80211_is_element_inherited() reads the first data octet of the candidate element (id = elem->data[0]) to look it up in an extension non-inheritance list. It does so after testing elem->id, but without verifying that the element actually has a data octet. A zero-length extension element (WLAN_EID_EXTENSION with length 0) therefore makes it read one octet past the end of the element. _ieee802_11_parse_elems_full() runs this check for every element of a frame once a non-inheritance context exists -- e.g. while parsing a per-STA profile of a Multi-Link element in a (re)association response, or a non-transmitted BSS profile -- so a crafted frame from an AP can trigger a one-octet slab-out-of-bounds read during element parsing: BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in cfg80211_is_element_inherited Read of size 1 ... in net/wireless/scan.c Return early (treat the element as inherited) when an extension element carries no data, mirroring the existing handling of empty ID lists. The bug was found by fuzzing ieee802_11_parse_elems_full() under KASAN.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-68402 since 07/30/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/10/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.148, 6.12.101, 6.18.42, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 20c308d9a57722801961f816395bf825f7bde6bc/84bd907361c56fbd5523eceb2682cb39da059bd5/11ac7a5e75f5132f1778e0c60981d30dc29fb869/ddf2773bcc8e49a43c561f22ec1e7924215d7947/cb8afea4655ff004fa7feee825d5c79783525383 is able to eliminate this problem.
