Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mintplex-Labs AnythingLLM up to 1.15.0. Affected by this vulnerability is the function recoverAccount of the file server/utils/PasswordRecovery/index.js of the component Account Recovery. The manipulation of the argument recoveryCodes with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

AnythingLLM is an application that turns pieces of content into context that any LLM can use as references during chatting. From 1.0.0 to 1.15.0, AnythingLLM's unauthenticated account-recovery flow in server/utils/PasswordRecovery/index.js uses recoverAccount() to deduplicate the raw recoveryCodes values before trimming them, so one valid code submitted twice with different surrounding whitespace can satisfy the two-code check. Each normalized value can also match the same stored hash instead of consuming a distinct hash. An attacker who knows the target username and one recovery code can call POST /api/system/recover-account in multi-user mode, receive a password-reset token, and use POST /api/system/reset-password to take over the account, including an administrator account.

The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-72917 since 08/10/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/11/2026).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
