Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Trolltech Qt. Affected by this issue is the function qutf8decoder::tounicode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Off-by-one error in the QUtf8Decoder::toUnicode function in Trolltech Qt 3 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted Unicode string that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow. NOTE: Qt 4 has the same error in the QUtf8Codec::convertToUnicode function, but it is not exploitable.
The bug was discovered 09/03/2007. The weakness was presented 09/03/2007 as Bug 269001 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4137 since 08/02/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27579 (GLSA-200710-28 : Qt: Buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156047 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Qt (ELSA-2007-0883)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36594), Tenable (27579), SecurityFocus (BID 25657†), OSVDB (39384†) and Secunia (SA26778†). See VDB-35986 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
