Details
A vulnerability has been found in WinImage 8.0/8.10 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in WinImage 8.10 and earlier allows user-assisted remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in a filename within a (1) .IMG or (2) .ISO file. NOTE: this can be leveraged for code execution by writing to a Startup folder.
The weakness was disclosed 09/15/2007 by j00ru (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4962 since 09/18/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
