Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc4 vc4 vc4_gem_object_mmap privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.147/6.12.100/6.18.41/7.1.5/7.2-rc4. This affects the function vc4_gem_object_mmap of the component vc4. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/vc4: Prevent shader BO mappings from becoming writable vc4_gem_object_mmap() rejects a writable mapping of a validated shader BO, but leaves VM_MAYWRITE set. Userspace can map the BO read-only and then turn it writable with mprotect(). Validated shader BOs must stay read-only: the validator checks the instructions once and the GPU trusts them afterwards. A writable mapping lets userspace rewrite the code after validation, bypassing the validator. Clear VM_MAYWRITE on the read-only path so the mapping cannot be upgraded, as i915 already does for its read-only objects.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-68445 since 07/30/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/18/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 334892 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-68445), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.6.148, 6.12.101, 6.18.42, 7.1.6 or 7.2-rc5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9f0ee411fc2d76333d6087c5862ffa907cf7a175/019e6ad247f7fd038d2e009789f6d9bfcccb1ae7/6deaa317201851c644c431b57682e54d06b35838/fe168ef1d232d734d9998fd74822e2e20930dfff/0c9e6367639548307d3f578f6943ce72c9d39087 is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (334892) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2026-2799). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
