Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenStack Designate up to 20.0.1/21.0.0/22.0.0. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function _is_subzone/_is_superzone of the component Scheduler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In OpenStack Designate before 22.0.1, zone creation checks (_is_subzone, _is_superzone, and the duplicate-zone DB constraint) are scoped to the target pool only. An authenticated user can bypass these checks by scheduling a zone to a different pool via the AttributeFilter scheduler, creating an overlapping zone that conflicts with another tenant's zone. This enables cross-tenant DNS hijack (redirecting traffic to attacker-controlled IPs) and DNS denial of service (NODATA responses). Exploitation requires a multi-pool deployment with AttributeFilter enabled in scheduler_filters, which is a non-default but documented and supported configuration for self-service tiering.
The advisory is shared for download at launchpad.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-71193 since 08/05/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
Upgrading to version 20.0.2, 21.0.1 or 22.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2026-57689). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
