Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component GDI Image Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in an API in GDI in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Vista Gold and SP1, and Server 2008 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code via a WMF file with a malformed file-size parameter, which would not be properly handled by a third-party application that uses this API for a copy operation, aka "GDI Heap Overflow Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 12/09/2008. The weakness was published 12/09/2008 by Juan Caballero with Carnegie Mellon as MS08-071 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-3465 since 08/04/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35070 (MS08-071: Vulnerabilities in GDI+ Could Allow Remote Code Execution (956802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90469 (Microsoft Windows GDI+ Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-071)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-071 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
