RsyncProject rsync up to 3.4.x Block Matching Logic out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in RsyncProject rsync up to 3.4.x and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Block Matching Logic. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

rsync before 3.5.0 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the sender-side block matching logic that allows a malicious receiver to trigger memory access before the start of an allocated buffer by sending a crafted checksum block with a length of zero. Attackers can send a specially crafted checksum set containing a zero-length block to cause a negative offset calculation during delta computation, resulting in an out-of-bounds read of file data buffer memory on the sender side.

It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-53792 since 06/10/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy.
