Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in RsyncProject Rsync up to 3.4.x. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component I/O Timeout Implementation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
rsync 3.1.0 before 3.5.0 contains a signed integer overflow vulnerability in the I/O timeout implementation that allows attackers to permanently disable connection timeouts by injecting MSG_IO_TIMEOUT messages carrying non-positive (zero or negative) values. Attackers can craft malicious MSG_IO_TIMEOUT messages that cause the timeout variable to wrap to a non-positive value, preventing the timeout check from firing and enabling idle or stalled connections to hold daemon slots indefinitely, leading to resource exhaustion.
The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-70462 since 08/04/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
Upgrading to version 3.5.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
