PostGIS 2.3.3 FlatGeobuf property metadata decoder out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PostGIS. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component FlatGeobuf property metadata decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

PostGIS before 3.7.0beta2 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability that allows attackers to cause memory disclosure or a server crash by supplying a malformed FlatGeobuf buffer. The FlatGeobuf property metadata decoder verifies that a string length field is present but fails to verify that the subsequent string body is contained within the supplied buffer before materializing it into a SQL-visible value, enabling memory disclosure or denial of service.

The advisory is shared at mehmetince.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-73515 since 08/12/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at mehmetince.net. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 344849 (AlmaLinux 10 : postgresql16-postgis (ALSA-2026:65899)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
