A vulnerability was found in Eb Design Pty Ltd EbCrypt 2.0.0.2087. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality in the library ebcrypt.dll of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Absolute path traversal vulnerability in the EbCrypt.eb_c_PRNGenerator.1 ActiveX control in EBCRYPT.DLL 2.0.0.2087 and earlier in EB Design ebCrypt allows remote attackers to create or overwrite arbitrary files via a full pathname in the argument to the SaveToFile method. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The weakness was disclosed 09/24/2007 by shinnai (Website). The advisory is shared at shinnai.altervista.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5110. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by shinnai and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120834 (ebCrypt ActiveX Control Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12604.
