Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.39/7.1.4. Affected is the function bpf_iter_attach_map of the component BPF Iterator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Reject exclusive maps for bpf_map_elem iterators Exclusive maps (aka excl_prog_hash) are meant to be reachable only from the single program whose hash matches. This is enforced by check_map_prog_compatibility() when the map is referenced from a program such as signed BPF loaders. A bpf_map_elem iterator, however, binds its target map at attach time in bpf_iter_attach_map() instead of referencing it from the program, so the exclusivity check is never reached. On top of that, the iterator exposes the map value as a writable buffer.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2026-74360 since 08/15/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
Upgrading to version 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5cf2c85b1231218a3e3e9f188afb4fe2e17903d5/c3da741d5b2119c61c4498bc936f0fc1dbc3c79b/3c56ee343f9412d81918635c3e25e22a5dd6d87e is able to eliminate this problem.
