Linux Kernel up to 6.18.39/7.1.4 nvmet-tcp nvmet_tcp_tls_handshake_done return value

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.39/7.1.4 and classified as critical. The affected element is the function nvmet_tcp_tls_handshake_done of the component nvmet-tcp. Executing a manipulation can lead to return value. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-74385. The attack can be launched remotely. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.39/7.1.4 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function nvmet_tcp_tls_handshake_done of the component nvmet-tcp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a return value vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-252. The product does not check the return value from a method or function, which can prevent it from detecting unexpected states and conditions. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvmet-tcp: check return value of nvmet_tcp_set_queue_sock The return value of nvmet_tcp_set_queue_sock() is currently ignored in nvmet_tcp_tls_handshake_done(). If it fails (e.g., due to the socket not being in TCP_ESTABLISHED state), the socket callbacks will not be properly set, leading to queue and socket leakage. Fix this by capturing the return value and calling nvmet_tcp_schedule_release_queue() on failure to ensure proper cleanup.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-74385 since 08/15/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch cba2ee57fd302727aea7d41e9d9cd0969f5df0fb/22aa70f9a0544643ec37d442b6fcb1833d804462/7ef789703e2b91775dcb36b2efa46325be31a2a0 is able to eliminate this problem.
