This vulnerability appears as CVE-2026-74399. The attack may be performed from remote. There is no available exploit.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4. This vulnerability affects the function evm_read_xattrs of the component EVM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized resource vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-908. The product uses or accesses a resource that has not been initialized. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: evm: terminate and bound the evm_xattrs read buffer evm_read_xattrs() allocates size + 1 bytes, fills them from the list of enabled xattrs, and then passes strlen(temp) to simple_read_from_buffer(). When no configured xattrs are enabled, the fill loop stores nothing and temp[0] remains uninitialized, so strlen() reads beyond initialized memory. Explicitly terminate the buffer after allocation, use snprintf() for each formatted line, and pass the accumulated length, without risk of truncation, to simple_read_from_buffer().
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-74399 since 08/15/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).
