Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4 fbcon fbcon_new_modelist null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4. This issue affects the function fbcon_new_modelist of the component fbcon. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbcon: fix NULL pointer dereference for a console without vc_data fbcon_new_modelist() runs when a framebuffer's modelist changes. For each console mapped to it with fb_display[i].mode set, it reads vc_cons[i].d and passes the vc_num to fbcon_set_disp(). This assumes a console with a mode set has a vc_data, but it can be NULL. fbcon_set_disp() sets fb_display[i].mode before it checks vc_data, and fbcon_deinit() leaves the mode set after the vc_data is freed. fbcon_new_modelist() then dereferences the NULL vc_data. Keep fb_display[i].mode set only while the console has a vc_data. Check vc_data before setting the mode in fbcon_set_disp(), and clear the mode in fbcon_deinit(). The existing mode check in fbcon_new_modelist() then skips such consoles.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-74424 since 08/15/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.
