Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4 ims-pcu ims_pcu_irq out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ims_pcu_irq of the component ims-pcu. This manipulation of the argument urb_in_buf/urb_ctrl/urb_ctrl_buf/actual_length/max_in_size causes out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-72076. The attack can be initiated remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4. Affected by this vulnerability is the function ims_pcu_irq of the component ims-pcu. The manipulation of the argument urb_in_buf/urb_ctrl/urb_ctrl_buf/actual_length/max_in_size with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Input: ims-pcu - fix out-of-bounds read in ims_pcu_irq() debug logging The debug logging in ims_pcu_irq() unconditionally prints data from pcu->urb_in_buf. However, if the interrupt fired for pcu->urb_ctrl, the actual data resides in pcu->urb_ctrl_buf. If urb->actual_length for the control URB exceeds pcu->max_in_size, this leads to an out-of-bounds read. Fix this by printing from the correct buffer associated with the URB.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-72076 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.261, 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4d2553e9a76a11500ec670cbe16b7fd3da4832de/b746e853721dee91e4234c033d1b90f4605705bb/e6153407d7edabc6ff98f0fda415d556c0bcb57a/3fd7c0ace245334f2a0bd29fdcb680ad56e9b275/20fbf3ca0259d00664d1ede88837e1f11b49a88e/9c964fc9507aeab74376ba9f892cf84ad6950dfe/f97bfc1a0766802a99167b3dc62d1ee7dca929fe/403b0a6970b1084bb27907c0f8225801fdd0fe1d is able to eliminate this problem.
