Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc2 batman-adv skb_split memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc2. Impacted is the function skb_split of the component batman-adv. This manipulation causes memory leak. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2026-72228. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc2. Affected by this vulnerability is the function skb_split of the component batman-adv. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: batman-adv: frag: fix primary_if leak on failed linearization If the skb has a frag_list, it must be linearized before it can be split using skb_split(). But when this step failed, it must not only free the skb but also take care of the reference to the already found primary_if.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-72228 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 5.10.261, 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e59b1960f71521ce4eb4397c4e82f5285601ab57/c1b28432fd6345e0d2308f39c507ed5750c265d2/4f3bf293f7662500142234ae6f23725953690bc9/d2148aeee93197ccf821114489775132f28eebf5/db3c700826e8126fbdaa83468a9c4ee4ee65319f/a90f4fff9025371bce5371daa610af957de8dd6a/777a88256d6f70672116e53400659cc417e1feaa/353d2c1d5492e53ae34f490a84494124dc3d3531 is able to eliminate this problem.
