Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4 fbdev tdfxfb_probe memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function tdfxfb_probe of the component fbdev. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbdev: tdfxfb: fix potential memory leak in tdfxfb_probe() In tdfxfb_probe(), the memory allocated for modelist using fb_videomode_to_modelist() when CONFIG_FB_3DFX_I2C is defined, is not freed in the subsequent error paths. Fix that by calling fb_destroy_modelist().

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-72268 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.10.261, 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 237611edf15172e4dc7fa9b3b71c2445602d3459/2199d70efc5bea0e9b4462a4f9e4c3d3c21c5d34/b039e0693df003c5baa1e89630344f92a78afb15/dfbb1a695d8891774c80c0e2a9192afb66469eb7/b7b26adc2718ca8f81ca75cd03aee94269d00e8a/e1ca9b8559e0f5959228626bdeaae530a1ee0337/2fd16a94bea5e0c3e93791436cf8a800b175762a/bb019d755366cc3e777a12d4bf457ff289837370 is able to eliminate this problem.
