Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.39/7.1.4/7.2-rc3. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component KVM/arm64/nv. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a permission vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-275. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: arm64: nv: Respect read-only PFN when mapping L1 VNCR KVM currently maps the L1 VNCR into the host stage-1 by relying entirely on the permissions of the guest stage-1. At the same time, it is entirely possible that the backing PFN is read-only (e.g. RO memslot), meaning that the L1 VNCR should use at most a read-only mapping. Cache the writability of the PFN in the VNCR TLB and use it to constrain the resulting fixmap permissions. Promote VNCR permission faults to an SEA in the case where the guest attempts to write to a read-only endpoint. Conveniently, this also plugs a page leak found by Sashiko [*] resulting from the early return for a read-only PFN.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2026-72279 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation requires an enhanced level of successful authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1222 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5c50db5bcbb9073cb2fd97be51b962de92f429e9/d35defbdfcb15296ebe28968ad7452c1a8c11cea/2684e02bac41c5220f6c1ab2bdcc957b71812977 is able to eliminate this problem.
