Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc5 KVM release of resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Performing a manipulation results in release of resource. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2026-74515. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.150/6.12.102/6.18.43/7.1.7/7.2-rc5. This affects an unknown code of the component KVM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a release of resource vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-772. The product does not release a resource after its effective lifetime has ended, i.e., after the resource is no longer needed. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: KVM: s390: pci: Reject adapter interrupt forwarding if already enabled The MPCIFC instruction doesn't allow registering adapter interrupts without first unregistering. So reject any request to enable interrupt forwarding if its already enabled for the zPCI device. This also fixes overwriting and thus leaking resources when the ioctl is called multiple times for the same device.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-74515 since 08/15/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

Upgrading to version 6.6.151, 6.12.103, 6.18.44, 7.1.8 or 7.2-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 78d9648e7e960546d5b72504a0b0358cd8bb1e9d/6be1ff49ba81f96a6fa55915e6d920be43ac57cc/6837f0ae85fd54cf64c8a0c7c530bba2fae0a207/591952b63a9f976da7d49f719f36ec826ee2a575/8fa01be5a6149404adb82c0979a78f6347edd3ef is able to eliminate this problem.
