Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc5 kvaser_usb_leaf kvaser_usb_leaf_wait_cmd buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.150/6.12.102/6.18.43/7.1.7/7.2-rc5. Affected by this issue is the function kvaser_usb_leaf_wait_cmd of the component kvaser_usb_leaf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: can: kvaser_usb_leaf: kvaser_usb_leaf_wait_cmd(): validate received command extents The wait and bulk receive paths walk variable-length commands from a USB buffer. A nonzero command shorter than CMD_HEADER_LEN can still be dispatched, and the wait path copies a matching command into a fixed caller-owned struct kvaser_cmd using the device-provided length. Reject nonzero commands that do not contain the fixed header or that extend beyond the current USB buffer item. In the wait path, also reject a matching command that exceeds the destination before copying it.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-74458 since 08/15/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.151, 6.12.103, 6.18.44, 7.1.8 or 7.2-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 695aea154bb2d453e6daada1510972fafd075285/3d0897ec623e422695d70d80ae456f89476c5328/185cb1fa38142a3cbf223dd8b3abb24217f330d3/21f0465fd86d77794aaed8e05f833634f68d178d is able to eliminate this problem.
