Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc5 scsi_debug resp_report_zones alloc_len out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.150/6.12.102/6.18.43/7.1.7/7.2-rc5. The impacted element is the function resp_report_zones of the component scsi_debug. Executing a manipulation of the argument alloc_len can lead to out-of-bounds write. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-74470. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.150/6.12.102/6.18.43/7.1.7/7.2-rc5. This vulnerability affects the function resp_report_zones of the component scsi_debug. The manipulation of the argument alloc_len with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: scsi_debug: Fix REPORT ZONES alloc_len underflow OOB write resp_report_zones() sizes the reply buffer from the CDB allocation length. The v3 fix rounds alloc_len up with ALIGN() before deriving the descriptor count: rep_max_zones = (ALIGN((u64)alloc_len, RZONES_DESC_HD) - RZONES_DESC_HD) >> ilog2(RZONES_DESC_HD); arr_len = (u64)RZONES_DESC_HD * (rep_max_zones + 1); For alloc_len in 0xFFFFFFC1..0xFFFFFFFF, ALIGN() rounds up to 0x100000000, so arr_len is 4 GB. On 32-bit, kzalloc()'s size_t is 32-bit and truncates 0x100000000 to 0; kzalloc(0) returns ZERO_SIZE_PTR, which passes the !arr check, and desc = arr + 64 is then dereferenced in the loop -> out-of-bounds write / panic. Clamp rep_max_zones to devip->nr_zones. The loop already stops at sdebug_capacity (after nr_zones zones), so a report can never hold more than nr_zones descriptors; the clamp does not change the report, it only bounds arr_len to (nr_zones + 1) * RZONES_DESC_HD, a real device property that can never reach 0x100000000.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-74470 since 08/15/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.151, 6.12.103, 6.18.44, 7.1.8 or 7.2-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 49e5b25a0b74dbac595f122e5608fdce2918cc4e/495058429ca55ab7fcc21977b63b92907ad68066/2047ed09bf13453b7d6f9431b112ec07984dd69b/d6e6da6bc3b53231fac77ffab428da8173ee729c/93dde0bf2f39a0f9f57fd610aa3201ce5b753433 is able to eliminate this problem.
