Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc5 ALSA data_ep_set_params out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.150/6.12.102/6.18.43/7.1.7/7.2-rc5. It has been classified as very critical. This affects the function data_ep_set_params of the component ALSA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: usb-audio: Fix DMA buffer out-of-bounds write when fill_max is set When a USB audio endpoint requests full packet transfers via the fill_max descriptor flag, data_ep_set_params() promotes ep->curpacksize to ep->maxpacksize. However, maxsize is left at the original sample-rate derived value. Since u->buffer_size is allocated as maxsize * packets, the resulting DMA buffer is far too small for the requested transfer length. When the USB host controller streams up to curpacksize bytes per packet, it writes past the end of the buffer via DMA, corrupting kernel heap memory. Update maxsize to curpacksize when fill_max is set so that the allocated DMA buffer size matches the actual transfer request size. [ changed to reassign maxsize only when ep->fill_max is set -- tiwai ]

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-74498 since 08/15/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.151, 6.12.103, 6.18.44, 7.1.8 or 7.2-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3852974608f53e530e27c21d0c6c7d79c17b3f5a/f9b6c9576568169139ac151f7881474f384659fd/04595233e5606d452f9f47e6989fc7ae7440fd40/bd65b7191683bebd9923904f0558b9211b9129da/d0199ae1666ff9ae2d1d568d64c3430d4c47f0e5 is able to eliminate this problem.
