Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc5 Bluetooth HIDP hidp_session_run uninitialized pointer

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.150/6.12.102/6.18.43/7.1.7/7.2-rc5. It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects the function hidp_session_run of the component Bluetooth HIDP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized pointer vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-824. The product accesses or uses a pointer that has not been initialized. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: HIDP: validate numbered report payloads When hidp_get_raw_report() waits for a numbered report, hidp_process_data() compares the expected report number with skb->data[0]. A connected HIDP peer can reply with only a DATA transaction header, leaving the skb empty after the header is removed. KMSAN reports an uninitialized-value use in hidp_session_run(), with the value originating in __alloc_skb() through vhci_write(). The transaction header checks remove the empty-frame reports, but this report remains until the payload check is added. The comparison can also consume a peer-controlled byte beyond the declared L2CAP PDU. A DATA | FEATURE response followed by an extra 0x01 byte made the current code accept that byte as report ID 1 and complete HIDIOCGFEATURE with a zero-byte result. With this change the malformed response is rejected with -EIO, while a subsequent valid response still succeeds. Require a payload byte before comparing a numbered report ID. Unnumbered reports continue to accept an empty payload.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2026-74507 since 08/15/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).

Upgrading to version 6.6.151, 6.12.103, 6.18.44, 7.1.8 or 7.2-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b7ad105d46acd828e424454815e4cd31069e047a/7e7162427659b70ea17cd41b1f79e2e64c246690/27cc0e603355c585f1e5da8398faa4d36d498188/9c841f59e10b5d75c398a3fc6b2da448d2a2276b/34f53d27b81a16a02828c8fdfa4e02badc326f17 is able to eliminate this problem.
