Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.144/6.12.96/6.18.39/7.1.4. This vulnerability affects the function mlxsw_sp_port_lag_join of the component mlxsw. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mlxsw: fix refcount leak in mlxsw_sp_port_lag_join() When mlxsw_sp_port_lag_index_get() fails, mlxsw_sp_port_lag_join() returns an error without releasing the lag reference obtained by the earlier mlxsw_sp_lag_get(). All other error paths in the function jump to the cleanup label that ends with mlxsw_sp_lag_put(), so this is a single missed release. Fix the leak by replacing the bare 'return err' with a goto to the existing error cleanup label, which will drop the reference safely.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-72308 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).
Upgrading to version 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability.
