Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4 mma8452 mma8452_read uninitialized resource

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as very critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4. This vulnerability affects the function mma8452_read of the component mma8452. Performing a manipulation results in uninitialized resource. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2026-72479. The attack requires a local approach. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 7.1.4. This affects the function mma8452_read of the component mma8452. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized resource vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-908. The product uses or accesses a resource that has not been initialized. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iio: accel: mma8452: handle I2C read error(s) in mma8452_read() Currently, If i2c_smbus_read_i2c_block_data() fails but mma8452_set_runtime_pm_state() succeeds, mma8452_read() returns 0. As a result, the caller mma8452_read_raw() assumes the read was successful and proceeds to use a buffer containing uninitialized stack memory. Add proper checking of the I2C read return value and propagate errors to the caller.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-72479 since 08/09/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. Additional levels of successful authentication are required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).

Upgrading to version 5.10.261, 5.15.212, 6.1.178, 6.6.145, 6.12.97, 6.18.40, 7.1.5 or 7.2-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b488055e81d9faaaf2f8aaff45f9944040ac4493/f9ec3f3e9cf27dd06cd3725eeaa44e3ce46be893/b4932fc325e84a3233413daf230b043818c8a824/eed69f8a10b82989ad732ace0fb43a9fb4e7fe35/f3d905ea1e4996d933074481e80d96ecd74a9904/1cddef80a180af74c33d2f26c962ce92b60fded4/f3d413e701c5e54bef736b638967724dda880365/5bdff291d20c31b365d9ddfe9c426fbfb41da5bb is able to eliminate this problem.
