Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc1 STP br_stp_timer.c br_topology_change_detection use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 7.2-rc1. This vulnerability affects the function br_topology_change_detection of the file net/bridge/br_stp_timer.c of the component STP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bridge: stp: Fix a potential use-after-free when deleting a bridge The three STP timers are not supposed to be armed while the bridge is administratively down. They are synchronously deactivated when the bridge is put administratively down and the various call sites check for 'IFF_UP' before arming them. This check is missing from br_topology_change_detection() and it is possible to engineer a situation in which the topology change timer is armed while the bridge is administratively down, resulting in a use-after-free [1] when the bridge is deleted. Fix by adding the missing check and for good measures synchronously shutdown the three timers when the bridge is deleted. [1] ODEBUG: free active (active state 0) object: ffff88811662b9b0 object type: timer_list hint: br_topology_change_timer_expired (net/bridge/br_stp_timer.c:120) WARNING: lib/debugobjects.c:629 at debug_print_object+0x1bc/0x450, CPU#9: ip/359

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2026-72389 since 08/09/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/15/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 335740 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2026-72389), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
